What it is
A relay for browser calls: when two participants cannot connect directly because of a router or the network, the audio goes through a TURN server. It cannot decrypt the conversation.
How we use it
Peregovorka runs its own coturn next to the WebRTC voice: credentials are temporary and live for an hour, and the secret never leaves the server.
Where it helps a business
When browser voice goes directly between participants, some people cannot connect: a router, a mobile network or a corporate firewall gets in the way. Without a relay those participants simply cannot hear the others.
How we use it
In Peregovorka voice goes over WebRTC directly between participants, and those who cannot connect directly are served by our own coturn. Credentials are temporary and valid for an hour, the secret never leaves the server, and the relay cannot decrypt the conversation because voice is encrypted between browsers.
Common problems
- A permanent TURN password. It can be stolen and your server used as a free relay; that is why credentials are temporary.
- Load. The full audio stream passes through TURN, so the more people without a direct connection, the more traffic on the server.
When you do not need it
If calls go through a ready-made service, you do not need your own TURN; only your own voice platform does.
