What is Your own voice and chat server

What it is

A replacement for Discord or Zoom on your own server: voice rooms, chats, screen streaming. Keeps working when public services are blocked, and data never leaves for a third-party cloud.

How we use it

Our own "Peregovorka": voice over WebRTC, chats and streaming with a custom client. We also deploy ready solutions: Mumble, Matrix, Jitsi, depending on the task.

Where it helps a business

  • Work calls and chats must not depend on an external messenger and its blocks.
  • The team's correspondence should live on your server, not with another company.
  • You need a private broadcast for your own people: a presentation, screen sharing, a game.

How we use it

Peregovorka is our platform on our own server; it runs in a browser on desktop and phone with nothing to install:

  • three shared voice channels, calls in private conversations, groups, a voice-only mode;
  • chats with reactions, replies, polls, search, attachments and voice messages, with 90 days of history;
  • screen sharing and a private SRT stream watched in the browser;
  • guest, member, admin and direct-messages-only roles, a sign-in journal and a "sign out everywhere" button.

Code login from Telegram and approval of new accounts are handled by a separate bot. We deploy such a platform under Infrastructure; there are ready-made options too, such as Mumble, Matrix and Jitsi, chosen for the task.

Common problems

  • Voice holds up to 10 people per channel. Voice goes directly between participants; more people would need a different design.
  • Chats are not end-to-end. Voice is encrypted between browsers, but text sits in the database on the server, and anyone with root on the machine can read it.
  • Sharing a machine with other services. The streaming server used to share a machine with a VPN node; now it has a machine of its own.

When you do not need it

If the team is happy with an ordinary messenger and its availability is not in question, your own server is an unnecessary worry.
