What is WordPress

What it is

The world's most popular content management system (CMS) โ€” lets you edit content without a developer, through an admin panel in the browser.

How we use it

We build showcases and sites with a familiar admin panel on it, but with a custom theme and no third-party plugins or builders: fewer updates and vulnerabilities, light pages. The โ€œDykhanie Povolzhyaโ€ showcase is built this way. We also migrate and maintain existing sites: three sites moved from the outdated Joomla 3.10 to WordPress, keeping the catalogue, forms and search rankings.

Where WordPress helps a business

  • The owner or a staff member already knows the WordPress admin and does not want to relearn.
  • An old site on an outdated CMS has to move without losing its URLs and search rankings.
  • You need a showcase or catalogue where prices, availability and texts change without a developer.

How we use it

  • A showcase with no online payment. For the essential-oils brand ยซะ”ั‹ั…ะฐะฝะธะต ะŸะพะฒะพะปะถัŒัยป: a custom theme with no third-party plugins or page builders, in plain CSS and JS, so the page stays light on a phone. A custom Products post type with volumes, retail and wholesale prices, a cart on the buyer's device, and ordering through a VKontakte community bot. The admin has a Site section: prices and stock in one table, texts with a live preview, a built-in guide.
  • A move from Joomla. Three sites of a cardboard packaging manufacturer on Joomla 3.10 are moving to two WordPress sites: content parsed from database dumps by Python scripts, an old-URL map turned into 301 redirects, and a catalogue of 325 FEFCO designs restored. The import can be re-run without duplicates. An Astra child theme keeps parent-theme updates from breaking our changes.

WordPress sites and moves from old CMSs are under Websites and online stores.

Common problems

  • Password guessing. The protection counts wrong passwords per address: after three errors sign-in closes for 15 minutes, on a repeat for an hour, then for a day. The second line is on the entry nginx: at most 20 requests a minute to the login page.
  • Extra doors. We close XML-RPC and application passwords, hide the user list in the REST API and switch comments off when they are not needed.
  • Heavy plugins and page builders. Every plugin means updates and vulnerabilities, and a page builder adds weight. That is why we write our own theme.
  • Old URLs. In Joomla an article's URL is built from the menu item, not the category, so a "correct-looking" address returns 404. The redirect map was built from the live site's real URLs: 24, 684 and 270 rules across the three sites.
  • Backups. The showcase keeps a daily snapshot of the database and photos for two weeks. Some WordPress demo sites on our server have no scheduled backups yet, and this is listed among the limitations.

When you do not need it

If a store has its own logic, such as sizes, colours, stock and wholesale prices, we build it on Nuxt and FastAPI with an admin panel made for the job. And if the site is a single business-card page, WordPress with a database is overkill.
